Portable Windows Live Messenger

Check it out! - http://www.ncnblue.com/wlmportable/

I've just compiled a portable version of Windows Live Messenger which can be run from a USB Key or Memory Stick.
No installation required. No administrator privileges required. Just launch from the single EXE file and your set to go.

Portable Windows Live Messenger 2009 (Build 14.0.8089.726)

Portable Windows Live Messenger 8.5 (Build 8.5.1302.1018)
http://www.ncnblue.com/wlmportable/Windows%20Live%20Messenger%208.5.exe

I changed the build string for WLM 8.5 to re-enable the ability to sign in ... as Microsoft blocked all 2007 and 2008 versions of MSN last month.

I've just compiled a new portable version of the latest Windows Live Messenger (Build 14.0.8117.416) which was released by Microsoft a few days ago.

Portable Windows Live Messenger 2009 (Build 14.0.8117.416)
http://www.ncnblue.com/wlmportable/Windows%20Live%20Messenger%2014.0.exe

Microsoft seem to have fixed the Windows 7 jump-list bugs. Much smoother and the contact list window instantly opens when clicked from the jump-list.
Previously, it would take a few clicks to open.

Build 14.0.8117.416 is the latest version. Anybody who has listed anything higher/newer is incorrect.

I've had a couple of attempts at making a portable version of WLM 2010 beta - however have been unsuccessful.
I still have a few tricks up my sleeve.. will post here when I have a working portable version

Hi Matt,

1) I get a "We are unable to run audio and video setup." error when I go to Tools >> "Audio and Video setup...". I can also get the following errors when I try to initiate Video and Voice calls respectively:
Video: Messenger is not available right now. Please try again later. (0x8ac70013)
Audio: Messenger is not available right now. Please try again later. (0x8ac70004)

2) The messenger hangs intermittently and especially so when I log off and log into another ID too quickly.

3) My Events Viewer also logged 4 side-by-side event-id:33 errors.

Two errors of the following:
Activation context generation failed for "C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\WLM\Windows Live Messenger\SKEL\7300-2.manifest". Dependent Assembly UCCAPI,processorArchitecture="x86",type="win32",version="2.0.0.0" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

and another two errors of the following:
Activation context generation failed for "C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\WLM\Windows Live Messenger\SKEL\7300-3.manifest". Dependent Assembly VVPltFrm,processorArchitecture="x86",type="win32",version="1.0.0.0" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

Thank you for the great port!

Hey made_mouse007

Thanks for posting :)

We're aware of the errors you've listed. We have tried many different methods during the compilation process, but it seems the VMware App we are using simply won't capture the MS Office Set Up Audio and Video module, which is used in Messenger.

Hopefully a later version will have this rectified, but for the time being - it's not possible to get Audio and Video working, unless Messenger has been installed previously on the system (which defeats the point of it being portable).
