What causes thrust bearings failure?

wallpapers Tech 2020-05-25
Thrust bearings are a special type of rotating bearings. Like other rotating bearings, they allow rotation between parts, but they are designed to support high axial loads (parallel to the shaft) while supporting them. Different types of thrust ball bearings are used to support different amounts of axial loads. Thrust ball bearings are used in applications where the axial load is small, where a ring supports the ball bearings. Spherical roller thrust bearings are used in applications requiring high axial loads and can also support unaligned shafts. Thrust bearings are used in high-speed applications that require oil lubrication, such as in the automotive and aerospace industries. Generally, thrust bearings consist of two washers (raceways) and rolling elements. The ball bearings in the two washers (raceways) can be grooved.

When a thrust bearing failure is discovered, it is usually too late. The failure has also caused damage to the thrust bearing itself and the crankshaft. The cause of thrust bearing failure can be traced back to one problem or multiple problems.

Naturally, incorrect assembly (choosing the wrong thrust bearing thickness, contamination during assembly, etc.) will directly lead to thrust bearing failure. Often, one or more related problems are usually to blame, including poor quality of the crankshaft surface, bearing overload or bearing surface misalignment.

As we all know, due to the greater thrust load (usually more than 2000 pounds), the current transmission design will cause the thrust bearing to fail. As original equipment manufacturers strive to improve fuel economy and minimize noise, vibration, and harshness, many automatic transmissions have increased forward thrust loads transmitted through the torque converter.

In addition, on manual gearbox vehicles, the use of a starter lock system (the clutch pedal must be depressed to start the engine) will increase the problem because this will apply positive pressure to the crankshaft during startup, when the pressure is little or no pressure. Oil lubrication on the thrust bearing surface. Bearing manufacturers have tried to help solve these OE-related problems by adding a fine dispersion of silicon in the bearing matrix and designing angled inclined areas on the thrust surface. These inclined areas help to promote the delivery of oil to the thrust area.
